Wagtails

Reception and Year 1

We are the Wagtail Class, a Reception class. Our class teacher is Mrs Shutler.

We learn through play with the adults playing alongside us to extend and scaffold our learning. We learn through our aspirational curriculum, which is written annually based on the needs and interests of each new cohort, to provide challenge and opportunity to develop a rich vocabulary.

No matter the weather, we have free-flow access between indoors and outdoors, and enjoy popping our wellies and waterproofs on to play outdoors in the rain, or woolly hat and gloves on a cold day. Our outdoor space is large with an excellent range of open-ended resources that we can use to support our imagination and curiosity while developing our gross motor skills while moving around the environment. Our indoor environment provides us with a wealth of opportunities. We enjoy playing in our ‘home from home’ corner where the children use real everyday objects they would find in our own homes. We take pride in the pieces of art we create in our studio and use the open-ended resources in our classroom to support our holistic learning.

Alongside our play, we develop lifelong learning skills through carefully planned learning opportunities, including regular cooking and our daily snack bar where we make our own snacks, such as porridge, sandwiches and wraps, regular walks into the Forest and Village centre and Forest School sessions. We are able to develop our creative skills through learning steps needed to be able to sew and when working on our woodworking bench, where the children use their imagination to create their own products.

Learning to read is a huge part of our class, with daily Little Wandle and regular reading practice sessions in class. We like to read regularly at home and hope to read at least four times a week.
